Alwin de Rooij is an artist with a broad interest in installation and performing arts in the context of (artistic) research. He currently works and lives in The Hague, The Netherlands.

From 1996 to 2001 he has been active as a composer, improviser and performer in several electronic music groups. During the end of this period he started to compose in a more conceptual way being attracted to the world of academic music. To further extend his knowledge and skills in this field he took composition lessons with ao. Michel van der Aa in Amsterdam. In 2004 he finished his studies in Medical Laboratory Technology. To develop both his artistic and scientific interests he studied at the interfaculty ArtScience at the Royal Conservatory and the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, from 2004 to 2008. Where he had the privilege to study with ao. Joost Rekveld, Martijn Padding and Dick Raaijmakers. Much of his work revolves around cognition, perception and communication in the context of man-machine, machine-machine and machine mediated interaction. Investigating the possibilities of art as an extension of scientific methodology. His current scientific interests mainly revolve around design methods for social robots. Currently he is completing his MSc thesis at the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science, Leiden University.
